Countdown to Race Day – Part 1

Welcome Racers!

Yes, you are (or soon will be) a Racer. Does that title sound exciting, fun, nerve-racking and/or intimidating? Truth is, everyone from the total beginner to the grizzled veteran racer gets the butterflies at the starting line. Once the gun is fired and the pedals start turning though, the nervousness, the spectators, the noise and color quickly fade away. Suddenly it’s just you, your bike, and the dirt road or trail in front of your wheel. Sure there’ll be other racers around you from time to time, but by and large, mountain bike racing is a solitary sport. There’s lots of time and space available to think, grunt, curse, hack, cry, question, moan, wonder, and finally, grin as you return to the circus of the finish line once again.

This Sunday morning, you’ll be spending some quality time with yourself, your bike and your inner dialog. A suggestion to help keep that discussion mostly positive: decide now what your goal for this race is. Your coaches and the SoCal league want you to have the best biking experience of your young lives. To us that means being outdoors in the paradise we live in, doing something new and different, having friends, family and perfect strangers rooting you on, being safe and wearing a smile as you cross the finish line.

If you find yourself in need of a goal, here’s a potential one:

“I will focus on experiencing as many sights, sounds, smells, tastes and sensations as I can while pedaling around on a silly contraption in the middle of nowhere. Very few people get or take this kind of opportunity and I’m either blessed enough or crazy enough to be an exception to the rule.”

Part 2 tomorrow.
